Legal Aid and Awareness
As migrant labourers are often uninformed about labour laws, they readily fall victim to exploitative contractors, who harass them in the workplace, expose them to unsafe working conditions, and pay them smaller (if any) wages compared to what was promised. To educate workers about their rights and what to do if those rights are violated, Jan-Daksha Trust offers legal awareness workshops many times throughout the year. To date, we have organized over 1475 of these legal awareness events.
In addition to providing legal awareness workshops, Jan-Daksha Trust has established a “Legal Day” celebration on the 9th and 22nd of each month (7th and 19th for our Mavli office). During this time, attendees—all of whom are migrant workers—state their grievances to an advocate, who then guides them on the legal actions they can take. If necessary, the advocate takes cases from each Legal Day to court.
As a result of both our Legal Day and legal awareness events, we have empowered migrant labourers to claim over Rs. 1,543,176 in financial compensation.
